History Of Pune

Pune is the second largest and major city in the Indian state of Maharashtra. From the very beginning, Pune remained a stronghold for the rule of various rulers. The Rashtrakutas ruled here first in 758, then came the rule of the Yadav dynasty, after which the Mughals ruled Pune till the middle of the 17th century. Pune became most famous because of the Maratha ruler Shivaji. Shivji spent his childhood in 'Lal Mahal' in Pune which was built by his father Shah ji. Shiva's mother Jijabai lived in this palace for a decade. After Shivaji's death in 1680, Aurangzeb changed the name of Pune to Muhiyabad. After this, the second Peshwa Thoral (senior) Bajirao ruled Pune from 1720 to 1740, during which time Pune again gained importance. Pune flourished under the rule of Nanasaheb Peshwa from 1740 to 1761. Many complexes and temples were built which brought glory to the city of Pune. The Marathas ruled Pune till 1818 and developed from it. Today Pune is the 8th most famous city in India.

In the Maratha Empire, Peshwa Bajirao built Shaniwar Wada in 1732. In Marathi, Shaniwar Wada means Saturday and Wada means teak. The Maratha War took place when the Marathas lost control to the East India Company, then it was built by the Marathas. There are many incidents and accidents related to Shaniwar Wada. Shaniwar Wada has five gates:- 1. Delhi Darwaza (This is the main gate of the complex which is facing north. 2. Mastani Darwaza (Bajirao's wife Mastani used this door to go outside the palace. It is facing north.) 3. Khidki Darwaza (window gate) (facing east) 4. Ganesh Darwaza (This door was used by women to go to the nearby Kasba Ganesh temple, it is towards the south-east.) 5. Jambhul Darwaza or Narayan Darwaza (Bajirao used this door to enter and leave the fort). The popularity of Shaniwar Wada is such that it has also been depicted in many films like Bajirao Mastani, Panipat etc.

Sultan Mohammad Shah Aga Khan II built the Aga Khan Palace in 1892. This building is spread over 19 acres, in which the building has been constructed in 7 acres. It took five years to build this palace. It is located in Yerawada, Pune. Till 1956 this building remained the palace of Aga Khan. In 1969, Aga Khan IV (who was the grandson of Aga Khan II) donated it to the Government of India. Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi and their associates were kept in this palace. Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai died during their imprisonment in this palace. A part of this palace is dedicated to both of them. In the true sense, this palace is seen as a Gandhi memorial.

Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Temple is an ancient Ganapati temple located in Pune. This temple is a famous temple of Maharashtra. Every year many devotees come here to have darshan of Ganapati. Big celebrities of India also get the pleasure of visiting here every year during Ganeshotsav. The construction of the temple is so beautiful that along with the idol of Ganesh, one cannot lose sight of the other proceedings of the temple. The Ganesh idol is 2.2 meters tall and is adorned with about 40 kg of gold. During the Ganesh festival, the appearance of the temple attracts more. Shrimant Dagdusheth Trust looks after the Dagdusheth temple. In 2017, 125 years of this temple were completed. This proves its antiquity.

Osho Ashram



Osho Ashram in Koregaon, Pune was established by Rajneesh Osho. Here the ideologies of Osho are brought to the people. A unique combination of nature and modernity is found here. Bamboo cottages, marble paths, waterfalls, greenery, cool air attracts visitors inside the ashram. Along with yoga, methods of contemplation and meditation are also taught in the ashram. According to Osho, how to live life is taught in this ashram. A dress code also applies within the ashram. It is mandatory for those coming here to wear a dress of maroon and white.

Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum

Dinkar Kelkar Museum established in Pune Maharashtra (1896-1990). It has a collection of objects of Dr. Dinkar Kelkar dedicated to the memory of his only son, Raja. Its exterior structure is reminiscent of the golden age of the whole era. It took him about 40 years to collect the objects and he handed over his collection to the Archaeological Department. Ancient copper utensils, sculptures, swords of the brave Peshwa Empire, clothes and many other interesting antiquities will be found here.

Shivneri Fort



Situated on a high hill, this Shivneri fort is situated near Junnar village in Pune district of Maharashtra. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born in this Shivneri Fort. Shivaji's father, Shahaji Bijapur, was a general in the army of Sultan Adil Shah, worried about the continuing war, Shahji sent her husband Jijabai to this safe fort. Shivji's childhood also passed in this palace. Inside this citadel was a temple of Mata Shivai Devi, after whom Shiva was named. The main attraction of this fort is an idol inside it which is of Shivaji along with his mother Jijabai. To enter this fort one has to cross seven gates. The high walls of the fort and the location on the mountain show that more emphasis was given on the security of this fort. There is also a pond inside the fort which is called Badami Talab. Many idols of Jijabai and Bal Shiva are situated near this pond. The beauty of this fort associated with the life of Shiva is made on sight.

Shinde Chhatri is located in the famous Venwada of Pune. It was built in the memory of 18th century Mahadji Shinde who served as the chief of Maratha army under the Peshwas from 1760 to 1780. Inside it is a Shiva temple which was built by Mahadji himself. Mahadji Shinde's samadhi was built near the same temple in 1965. It is one of the important landmarks of the city and commemorates the rule of the Maratha Empire.
